US PRESIDENT Barack Obama says
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was
shot down by a surface-to-air
missile that was launched from an
area controlled by Russian-backed
separatists inside of Ukraine.

Speaking at the White House,
President Obama called the
downing of the plane an “outrage
of unspeakable proportions” and
said the US was determined to get
to the bottom of what happened.
The president said he would be
speaking later today to Australian
leader Tony Abbot to offer
consolation for the country’s loss.

The Malaysia Airlines plane with
298 people on board, including at
least 28 Australians, was downed in
separatist-controlled eastern
Ukraine.
“Evidence indicates that the plane
was shot down by a surface-to-air
missile that was launched from an
area that is controlled by Russian-
backed separatists inside of
Ukraine,” President Obama said.

“We also know that this is not the
first time a plane has been shot
down in eastern Ukraine. “Over the
last several weeks Russian-backed
separatists have shot down a
Ukrainian transport plane and a
Ukrainian helicopter, and they
claimed responsibility for shooting
down a Ukrainian fighter jet.

          “Moreover, we know that these
separatists have received a steady
flow of support from Russia.
This includes arms and training. It
includes heavy weapons. And it
includes anti-aircraft weapons.”
He said a “credible international
investigation” was now needed to
establish what had happened and
for this to happen there needed to
be an immediate ceasefire in
Ukraine. He called on Russia not to
get in the way of such an
investigation.
   -The president’s comments were
backed up by a preliminary
classified US intelligence analysis
that concluded that the missile
was fired by pro-Russian
separatists inside eastern Ukraine,
a US defence official with direct
access to the latest information
told CNN.
-The official declined to be
identified because of the
sensitivity of the information.

    At the same time US Ambassador
to the United Nations Samantha
Power told an emergency meeting
of the UN Security Council that
separatist leaders boasted on
social media about shooting down
the plane and later deleted those
references.
Ms Power said that if it was proved
the separatists were responsible
for the atrocity then investigators
had to consider the possibility that
Russia offered help to operate the
system, CNN
