Cecilia Campbell, 93, lost her home of
71 years outside Twisp, Wash., in fires
that have ravaged Central Washington.
TWISP, Washingtone. — A fast-moving
wildfire has delivered the
Campbell family two blows.
Not only did the Carlton
Complex Fire destroy the home
Cecilia Campbell has lived in
since 1943, but then it raced
downhill and claimed the home
of daughter Lori Smith and her
husband, Brent.
The two houses, just a few
hundred yards apart, were no
match for the flames that have
consumed more than 238,000
acres in Central Washington.
Even though the blaze took
Cecilia Campbell's home, it
didn't take the 93-year-old's
spirit. The woman who raised
five children in the farmhouse
with a beautiful view vows to
rebuild.
Before flames destroyed the
home and its 71 years of
mementos Thursday, the family
fought valiantly.
Son Bob Campbell did all he
could with a backhoe and a
water pump.
"It was pretty fast-moving, with
sparks blowing in front of it,
and that's what got us in
trouble," he said.
"It was coming probably 40
miles an hour down that other
side of the creek," Cecilia
Campbell said. "In my mind I
couldn't believe it was gonna
burn. You just can't absorb
that it's going to do that much
damage."
Campbell left her home with
"the clothes on my back," while
a granddaughter was able to
pack some family photos.
"And then it just swept
everything," said daughter-in-
law Mary Campbell. Flames also
came close to her nearby home,
but it was undamaged.
The charred ruins of the house
Cecilia built with husband
Orvan in 1943 left Mary
Campbell in disbelief as she
surveyed the damage Sunday,
the first day the family could
return to the area.
"Everything in a matter of
minutes just went up," she
said. "It is everything …
everything that makes you who
you are is in five minutes
gone."
